Set Your Sights on Summer, Safely

Go Back

With the summertime season approaching, you’re probably thinking “fun in the sun” more than “summertime safety.”

But protecting yourself as you venture outdoors doesn’t have to be all that bad.

In honor of May being Healthy Vision Month and Ultraviolet Awareness Month, we’ve gathered a few tips to keep your sights set on lowering your risk of eye damage while sunshine rays are rising.

Style Meets Safety

From fedoras to your favorite pair of shades, glamming up can also mean going the protective route.

When choosing sunglasses, be sure to double-check with the manufacturer that they block both UV-A and UV-B rays. Believe it or not, but some sunglasses might actually be more harmful than wearing nothing at all.

In addition to covering your eyes directly, having the added layer of a hat is also helpful. Not only can it tie your outfit together, but sporting one of your favorite caps can also block damage based on how wide the brim is.

Pay Mind to Your Medications

Many prescriptions can actually make you more sensitive to light. The best thing to do is consult your doctor regarding your specific medications to make sure you’re fully informed of any potential risk.

Be Smart

Sometimes the most obvious isn’t always obvious. At the end of a sun, shiny day, common sense prevails. Don’t stare directly into the sun. Yes, it is easy to forget. Additionally, some people use tanning beds. Eye protection is particularly vital in those situations. Also, if you know you’ve had eye problems in the past, pay attention to how much exposure you’re experiencing.

Nobody wants to have cataracts, nor sunburnt eyes, in their future. So, remember, set your sights on a fun and safe summer.
